At Beaufort Memorial, our volunteers serve in a variety of roles and have many assignments throughout the hospital and our other locations in the Lowcountry. We strive to match each volunteer's skills and interests with the needs of Beaufort Memorial to ensure a meaningful experience for all. We also provide training for all positions. What are the qualifications?

  • Complete an application, interview and orientation.
  • Successfully complete background check, drug screen and be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • Be dependable, interested in helping others and have a positive attitude.
  • Be in good health to perform assigned tasks.
  • Some positions require specific experience or skills.
  • Participate in annual training and education classes.
  • Follow hospital policies and regulations.

Volunteer Opportunities

Beaufort Memorial volunteers offer their time and talent in a variety of ways designed to enhance the patient and family experience. Whether you want to help patients find their way, deliver smiles and encouragement or help behind the scenes – we look forward to finding a place for you to join our team. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and are representative of the diverse communities we serve. Opportunities for volunteers include:

  • Administrative – Provide general office assistance, such as filing, copying and answering phones.
  • Admissions – Help patients sign in, escort patients and provide general information to patients and family members.
  • Born to Read – BMH partners with Born To Read, a nonprofit program for early literacy, to train a special group of volunteers to encourage new mothers to read to their babies. Contact Janie Ephland, Executive Director of Born To Read, at 843-379-3350 or borntoreadec@gmail.com.
  • Courtesy Shuttle Driver – Provide transportation to patients and visitors around the hospital campus via golf carts.
  • Emergency Department Concierge – Greet patients and visitors, help patients sign in, relay information from the care team to families, provide comfort and support as needed.
  • Gift Shop – Greet staff and visitors, run the cash register and stock merchandise.
  • Inpatient Ambassador – Visit hospitalized patients to learn about their experiences, troubleshoot any concerns and provide information as needed.
  • Pastoral Care Services – Provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, families and staff.
  • Patient and Family Advisory Committee – A partnership between patients, family and staff that meets regularly to improve the patient and family experience.
  • Waiting Room Volunteers – Greet patients and visitors, help patients register, provide directions, escort patients and relay information from the care team to families.
